Smithsonian series spotlights Tlingit artist Robin Lovelace

Tradition and innovation

Tlingit artist Robin Lovelace will talk about her approach to traditional Northwest Indian art as it interfaces with contemporary expression. Lovelace, a Rasmuson fellowship recipient living in Anchorage, has received critical attention for her work in wood, metal and stone. She'll speak at noon Thursday as part of the Smithsonian Spotlight series. The talk is free with Anchorage Museum admission. Also free is admission itself on Saturday for Bank of America and Merrill Lynch cardholders.

Concert for Cam

Longtime Anchorage music director Cam McCarrey Bohman will conduct a choir of around 180 of her former Anchorage School District students on Saturday. The alumni from Romig Middle School, West and Dimond high schools and elsewhere have come together in this tribute to honor her 50 years in Alaska music. Advance tickets, $10, are available at West High from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. this Thursday and Friday by calling 907-727-9613 or by email, westchoiralumni@gmail.com. Proceeds will benefit ASD choral programs. The concert will take place at 7 p.m. Saturday in the West High Auditorium.

Musher signing

Iditarod racer Debbie Moderow will sign copies of her book, "Fast Into the Night: A woman, her dogs, and their journey north on the Iditarod Trail," starting at 5:30 p.m. Friday at Cabin Fever, 650 W. Fourth Ave. Moderow will talk about her experiences and greet visitors along with her dog Tiger.

Film

Alaska doc talk

A panel discussion about how documentaries about Alaska and by Alaskans are created, distributed and stored will take place at 4 p.m. Tuesday at the University of Alaska Anchorage Campus Bookstore. Panelists include Lael Morgan, Kim Rich, Francine Lastufka Taylor, Carolyn Robinson and David Holthouse. The conversation will likely include observations on whether or not there's a particular Alaska "style" to films in the documentary format. There is free parking for this event in the South Lot, Sports Complex NW Lot, West Campus Central Lot and the Sports Campus West Lot.

 

Mike Dunham

Mike Dunham was a longtime ADN reporter, mainly writing about culture, arts and Alaska history. He worked in radio for 20 years before switching to print. He retired from the ADN in 2017.
