Letter: The role of government

I am rather dumbfounded at what is going on in our government, both big and small. As far as I am concerned, you can do away with the Permanent Fund if it means meeting the basic needs of all Alaskans. In fact, I would like it if there were no longer a device utilized by politicians to get into office — the dividend.

Deputy Chief of Staff Jeremy Price should be ashamed of himself when he states, “that Alaskans should be choosing how to spend their money, not the government.” This begs me to ask why he and Gov. Dunleavy are in Juneau? Supposedly, they are there to watch out for our better interests. Our better interests include education, health and welfare which, in my opinion, are priorities. Rather than paying out all this money in PFDs, I’m sure every Alaskan would appreciate and, yes, expect a better future with thoughtful individuals manning the helm. If, in fact, I am empowered to choose how the money is spent, I ask them to please send me the information so I may make an informed decision. And while they’re at it, send that same information to every Alaskan, so they too can also be informed.

Since I am writing this letter, I am graciously requesting that we don’t touch our clocks in March. It is past time to dispense with Daylight Saving Time. Many states feel this way. It would be nice if Alaska could take a progressive step into the future without altering time zones. This is the time for such a mandate. The people have spoken over and over again. It would be wonderful if they thought our leaders listened.
