Letter: Respect the flag

I am truly appalled at the controversy of the use of the U.S. flag on Nike shoes. All versions of the U.S. flag are to be considered the emblem of our country, regardless of when they were used. The U.S. Flag Code, US Code section 8 (d) specifically states: “The flag should never be used for advertising purposes in any manner whatsoever. It should not be embroidered on such articles as cushions or handkerchiefs and the like, printed or otherwise impressed on paper napkins or boxes or anything that is designed for temporary use and discard. Advertising signs should not be fastened to a staff or halyard from which the flag is flown.”

Placing the flag on a pair of shoes of any style is certainly disrespectful. Those who are making this into an issue outside of the Flag Code are missing the point. Respect for our flag implies conforming with the first line of the Code: “No disrespect should be shown to the flag of the United States of America ...”

Perhaps those who believe placing a flag on the back of their pick up trucks, where it gets soiled and torn, need to also read the Flag Code. It is not patriots to desecrate our flag.
