Letter: Outrageous costs to Alaska seniors

I strongly reiterate the letter of Aug. 15 by Mr. Nesvick, “Don’t forget the Pioneer Home residents.”

It is outrageous and inhumane to expect the relatively few residents to foot virtually all the expense of the Pioneer Home program.

My wife is also a resident — nearly a “basket case” with Alzheimer’s disease. Yes, she has a long-term care plan, but that plan is not open-ended; it is dollar-limited. Whatever benefits remain will now be depleted in half the time, as the rates are doubled.

Rather than lay the burden on seniors, the governor needs to raise state revenue by instituting an appropriate tax program, and by ceasing all the state’s “give-away” tax relief for the oil companies.

I could afford to pay a fair tax; I cannot afford $13,333 each and every month.
