Letter: School Board failed on national anthem

The Anchorage School Board is not doing the job for which they were elected: Educate our young students. I love the national anthem, “The Star-Spangled Banner,” and I especially love the Alaska state song, “Alaska’s Flag.” Both songs stir my heart with the kindred spirit of America and Alaska and how proud I am to be an American and an Alaskan.

I responded to a Twitter post about the anthem vote with the following message: “How sad for our country and for Alaska. Pride in our nation is an honor. We are lucky to live in the best place on earth. Failure to teach respect and the history for our freedom and for our country is an educational failure. Educational failure is nothing to be proud of.”

The 2019 School Board election had a 25% turnout. Many parents didn’t even vote! Dave Donley was right to bring this resolution for a vote.

To the School Board: Please reconsider your vote and require the national anthem and Alaska’s state song in all our schools, or you will be voted out.
