Letter: The rule of law

The belief in the United States as a country governed by the rule of law could be approaching a historical hinge point. The president has accelerated his abuse of his oath of office and has created a culture of corruption that risks becoming a permanent fixture in our nation.

The responsibility to fight for justice falls on all Americans but particularly on our elected representatives. With this in mind, I would encourage our representative and our senators to heed the words of noted conservative Michael Gerson in a recent column: “This is perhaps the saddest result of Trump’s corruption: turning good men and women into the bodyguards of a petty, cruel, lawless, would-be autocrat.”

At this time of threat to our nation’s principles, what do Rep. Don Young and Sens. Lisa Murkowski and Dan Sullivan hope for when their children and grandchildren look back on their careers? Do they want to be remembered as the bodyguard of the petty, cruel and lawless would-be autocrat or as someone who fought for the rule of law?
