Letter: Host a wounded warrior

Over the Veterans Day weekend I, with several others, had the honor of hosting three wheelchair-bound Wounded Warriors — two from the Vietnam War and one triple amputee from the Afghanistan war — for a deer hunt on Afognak Island. It was, without a doubt, one of the most rewarding hunts I have ever been on.

All three of these former Marines had such a positive attitudes they were inspirations to everyone involved. They were especially fortunate to have the governor of Alaska, Mike Dunleavy, to pack and field-dress their deer. I can assure you he represented the people of Alaska very well and he didn’t mind getting his hands dirty for these deserving Marines.

I would encourage Alaska hunters and fisherman to consider inviting a wounded warrior on one of your trips. I can promise you it will be a very rewarding experience. You can simply contact one of the many wounded warrior organizations for a deserving candidate.
