Letter: Health care

Berta Gardner’s recent piece in the Anchorage Daily News on health care takes many liberties with the truth. One thing she gets right is that Sen. Dan Sullivan “will claim he is committed to protecting Alaskans with pre-existing conditions.” That’s because he is. A quick Google search will prove that. Sen. Sullivan is also committed to finding a responsible solution to health care that works for Alaskans.

For example, Sen. Sullivan and a bipartisan group of senators recently urged Senate leadership to extend funding for community health centers across the country. These centers save taxpayers billions of dollars and provide service to more than 29 million patients.

Criticizing what Senate Republicans are doing without providing any better ideas doesn’t help anyone. And the reason Gardner doesn’t propose any ideas is that the best thing Democrats can come up with — “Medicare for All” — is delusional. Who is going to pay for the trillions of dollars to fund it? Hardworking American taxpayers, that’s who.

We all understand that health care costs have to go down in Alaska and across the country. But socialist policies like “Medicare for All” are not the answer.

If Berta Gardner thinks health care is expensive now, she should wait until Democrats try to make it free.
