Letter: Closed minds

President Donald Trump has been impeached by the House. But apparently the Senate has already decided it will not vote to convict. Sen. Mitch McConnell has said that he is in “total coordination” with the White House on the president’s defense. And Sen. Lindsey Graham says he doesn’t want to call any witnesses: “I am trying to give a pretty clear signal I have made up my mind. I’m not trying to pretend to be a fair juror here.”

America may be heading down the road to authoritarianism. Where the president’s party completely refuses to even acknowledge the evidence of wrongdoing by this president against our democracy. I don’t think that’s what the founders had in mind when they wrote our Constitution and designed our system of three equal branches of government.

To quote Indiana Republican congressman Earl Landgrebe, who had this to say the day before Richard Nixon resigned the presidency in 1974:

“Don’t confuse me with the facts. I’ve got a closed mind. I will not vote for impeachment. I’m going to stick with my president even if he and I have to be taken out of this building and shot.”
