Letters to the Editor

Letter: Service to our country

I appreciate Sen. Lisa Murkowski’s effort to make us aware of the sacrifices our Alaska-based troops are currently making in Iraq. I, too, am deeply grateful for their ongoing work.

In her op-ed, she encouraged us to “think about ways we can show our support” for these men and women. How about demonstrating to them that the country and government they represent is one worthy of their sacrifice? In the Senate’s impeachment trial, she has a responsibility to remind our soldiers that the many freedoms we enjoy also encourage us to hold fair trials, allow the presentation of evidence, and listen and judge with open minds.

Her constituents, here and abroad in Iraq, are watching to see if she follows the oath she swore. She should show us this is a country with individuals who defend the law, keep the good of the country above self-interest and dare to do what’s right. Lives depend upon it.
