Letters to the Editor

Letter: Flex your muscles, voters

I am a 77-year-old Caucasian woman who probably does not know much about politics, but I do know about ethics and integrity. I have seen that our country is essentially going to hell in a handbasket and I worry about the future of a country that once was considered the land of milk and honey.

Sen. Mitt Romney should be praised and he should go down in history for being one of the most courageous American politicians of the 21st century. Where others feared to tread, he stood his ground and spoke his truth. For this, he should be commended by every American, whether you agree with his politics or not.

It is time to consider new blood in that place on Pennsylvania Avenue. It is time to infuse new energy with intelligence, common sense, integrity and wisdom. It is time for real transparency. It is time to cease “business as usual” which has the stench of corruption permeating throughout our entire political system. It is time to cease our attitudes about mass shootings as commonplace. It is time to say no to politicians who want to get rich off our backs. We are the employer, not the employee!

Presently, the majority of candidates, both Republican and Democrat, are too old. I’m old, so I know from where I speak. The sitting president is too old and a majority of the Democratic candidates are too old. If I have difficulty remembering, what are they doing? It is time to look to the future of our planet and the legacy we, who vote, leave behind.

It is past time to address climate change and what is happening to our planet. One cannot pay off or bribe Mother Nature. She will have her way with us.

Finally, I plead with Alaska governor Mike Dunleavy to cease being complicit in senior genocide. By altering the clocks twice a year, senior citizens are put at great risk, becoming ill and often requiring hospitalization because of the disruption in their circadian rhythms. An executive decision is necessary now, governor.

My fellow Alaskans/Americans, I urge you to become powerful and flex your muscles this year. I urge you to make a difference for your community, your city and your state by getting out and voting. There is no excuse not to. It is not only your right, it is your privilege.
