Letter: Handgun benefits outweigh costs

If recent letter-writer Bill Herman wants to read stories of people saved because someone had a handgun, he should read “Armed Citizen,” which collects gun stories. There, he would learn that you often don’t need to fire the gun, just indicate you have one and the situation goes away. Not everything makes the papers. I doubt many of these sexual assaults we are reading about in the “Unheard” series made the papers at the time, but they happened.

Yes, people do stupid things with handguns and innocent people die. People do stupid things with cell phones (texting while driving) and kill thousands of people a year, but we don't ban the phones or the cars. Why? The good outweighs the bad. Likewise with handguns.
