Letters to the Editor

Letter: Where’s the state?

You can’t construct a building without a steel framework. Likewise, you cannot control COVID-19 without a framework of enforceable centralized government standards based on science.

Alaskans initially followed that approach. We had that framework. We “crushed the curve.” Then we began to cautiously and rationally “open up” under state guidance which provided a 4-phase approach. We got through Phase 2. Then, suddenly, Gov. Mike Dunleavy ignored the Centers for Disease Control standards for proceeding (14 days with no new cases). He combined phases 3 and 4 and “let her rip.” Now as predictable as the tide, just like in so many other states, the COVID-19 case numbers in Alaska are increasing.

At Gov. Dunleavy’s “presser” on July 13, he reaffirmed his approach to COVID-19 management. From a fog of equivocations, contradictions and rationalizations came the message loud and clear – Gov. Dunleavy is not going any further to protect public health than have governors in states such as Arizona and Florida – two of the nation’s worst “hot spots.”

Despite lip service, Alaska’s approach to COVID-19 control will not rely on any framework of standards based on science but, at best, stopgap solutions based on politics. You are on your own.
