Letters to the Editor

Letter: Thanks to Pioneer Home staff

I'd like to recognize with many thank-yous and kudos to all the staff/caregivers at the Anchorage Pioneer Home on 11th Avenue. My father, who is 91 years old, has been a resident there for the past 6 years, and my sister and I would make visits once or twice per week. When they started the lockdown on March 17, it was very hard on everyone. Having no visual contact, we found this was extremely hard on my dad, as phone calls are not the same.

The Pioneer Home staff are working toward having "limited/scheduled" visitations for residents and family. I recently was informed that all the residents and staff/caregivers have been tested twice for COVID-19 and all were negative, both times! What a relief to read/hear these results and I feel this is a tremendous accomplishment, and it also shows that staff/caregivers took great steps to provide a safe and COVID-19 free environment for all our senior citizens in Anchorage Pioneer Home.

As hard as it is for so many of us as family members, not to mention the residents, not to see/visit each other, this is wonderful news. We in Anchorage are still “on hold” for any scheduled visitations due to the positive COVID-19 numbers going up. Having a loved one in a home is often hard for all to understand processes and gives us some relief of knowing our loved ones are being cared for with all the safety precautions stressed by our governor and mayor. This helps a little bit to get us closer to seeing/visit our loved one very soon. Thank you to all the staff/caregivers at Anchorage Pioneer Home.
