Letter: Time’s up for Young

Rep. Don Young has no platform to run on, so all he can do is disparage and lie about his opponent, Alyse Galvin. Following the Trump model, he uses labels such as “liberal Democrat” or “socialist” to describe Galvin. He tries to tie her to Nancy Pelosi, even though Galvin does not even know her. If this is supposed to scare me, it is not working!

Galvin does not endorse the Green New Deal, nor Medicare for All, but that does not stop Young’s campaign from lying that she does. Galvin is Alaska-born, growing up in Mountain View, unlike Young who was born and raised in California. He may have lived in Fort Yukon as a teacher long ago; however, he has not lived there for decades. It is boarded up except when photo opportunities demand. Young was a good advocate for Alaska in the distant past, but it is time we move on Alaska. Don Young has been barred from accepting any new committee chair positions because of ethics violations. He got caught accepting nearly $60,000 in travel gifts, dating back to 2001. In 2014, he received a letter of reproval from the House Committee on Ethics, a unanimous decision by both Republicans and Democrats. In 2019, Young held a leadership position on zero committees and one subcommittee. How is this helpful to Alaska?

Recall when Young told a group of seniors in late March of this year that the coronavirus was hyped up by the media? I believe he referred to it as the “beer virus.” I am betting the families of 200,000 Americans dead from this virus do not think that is funny at all. And now he is the only national candidate in the state to resume in-person fundraising since this pandemic took hold.

We must stop the madness and send this senior packing. We need a fresh voice for Alaska and someone who will look out for our interests over their own. And with Galvin part of the majority in the House, she will have far greater influence than Young. I hope you will join me in voting for Galvin, as a vote for Galvin is clearly a vote for Alaska.
