Letter: Restore America’s principles

One of the reasons we live in a stable country is that changes in leadership are governed by a set of protocols, regulations, and laws. This system works only as well as how committed those who are voted into office uphold their oath to “support and defend the Constitution … and bear true faith and allegiance to the same.”

We are in a crisis of leadership that goes beyond the White House. The Senate Republican majority has demonstrated that they neither understand nor respect rule of law. The latest demonstrations include changing laws and protocols regarding filling vacant seats on the Supreme Court, and moving to suspend Senate activity, due to COVID-19, except for pushing forward their Supreme Court nominee.

These are examples of dangerous precedents that set in motion governance for personal gain by those who are blinded by the shortsightedness of opportunism. They are driven by allegiance to political party and desire to maintain power at all costs. The incompetence that characterizes the Trump administration has been enabled by those in the majority, the Republican Party. They have placed allegiance to party above allegiance to country.

If we truly want our government to be on track, there needs to be a change in leadership that goes beyond the White House. The senators and representatives who have been enablers of this crisis in leadership should be voted out.
