Letter: Alaska needs change

We need a change. When it comes to election time, I have always felt like Alaskans have a form of amnesia. It seems that many of us forget what Don Young or Dan Sullivan have done to not support us or to embarrass us. Neither of these candidates looks at the issues and makes a decision based on what is best for the people. They vote the party line.

I am a registered Independent. I feel it is important to look at all candidates and decide who will be best for the good of the order. Please let me remind you: Elected officials are not serving appointments for life. They are elected positions and they need to be changed. If it doesn’t work, try somebody new. If you are a supporter of stacking the courts with conservatives, or backing legislation that supports tax breaks for the wealthy while taxing the middleman and low income workers more, or not having medical insurance, or a basic disregard for the law or the constitution, or you are not interested in better gun safety, or a woman’s right to choose, or insider trading, or a disregard for the global pandemic where the truth was known and no leadership was provided, or the right to peacefully protest, or systemic racism, or the destruction to our planet and the air we breathe, disregard of the Constitution which grants our democracy and freedoms, then you can go ahead and stick with what we have.

But if any of this does not sound OK to you, then we have got to get behind other candidates and give them a chance. Our country is broken and these guys have had a chance at fixing it and in my opinion, it has only gotten worse. Don Young lost his leadership role by violating the rules and Dan Sullivan never had any leadership. So please think about what is best for our state and our country when you pick your candidate and if you feel what we have is not working properly, or you find yourself stressed out and unhappy with our direction, then give somebody else a chance to make it better. Your vote has amazing power to change things up. And it is not for a lifetime unless we allow it to be. We get an opportunity to change it again in the next election. But in the meantime, give change a chance, please.
