Letter: Accountability needed

Some years ago, my home was broken into. I will never forget how violated I felt – the experience literally made me sick. I have the same feeling watching the video footage from the Jan. 6 riot at the U. S. Capitol. I wasn’t even there, but it still makes me sick.

Yet the majority of Republican Senators, including our own Dan Sullivan, were not paying attention to the presentations in Donald Trump’s second impeachment trial. They knew how they would vote before the trial ever began. They are scared of Trump’s power and they fear retaliation if they don’t support him. As Lindsey Graham said recently, “we (the Republican party) won’t make it through the midterms without Donald Trump.” And, as Marjorie Taylor Greene said, with obvious pride, “he owns the Republican Party.”

This second impeachment trial was not about removing Donald Trump from office – he’s already out. It’s about holding him responsible for what he did on Jan. 6 and in the months leading up to that day. He encouraged a riot in order to satisfy his determination to hold onto the White House. Five people died, and there could have been more deaths if the mob had been able to find Vice President Mike Pence and Speaker Nancy Pelosi. The riot wasn’t a hoax, any more than the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks were a hoax. Donald Trump needs to be barred from ever seeking or holding public office again, because this country can’t survive another Trump administration.
