Letter: Party over Constitution

Recent lies and subversive activities culminating in the Jan. 6 riot that swept through the U.S. Congress was far more dangerous than most people realize. Though the rioters were poorly organized and had no follow-up plan after the incursion, this was attempted insurrection.

Could this have been the end of democracy in America? What if a few patriotic Republican governors had not held the line for honest vote counts? What if a state legislature had refused to certify its election results? What if a few more U.S. congressmen had joined the throng of Republicans who kneel to Donald Trump? Would we now live in a fascist state?

Our own Sen. Dan Sullivan is one of those Republicans who put allegiance to Donald Trump above the Constitution, and who continues to do so.

I understand Sullivan was in the Marine Corps, and the motto of the Marine Corps League is “there is no such thing as an ex-Marine — once a Marine, always a Marine.” But U.S. Marines have courage. U.S. Marines swear allegiance to the Constitution. And U.S. Marines are true to their oath (Semper fi). Make no mistake, Sullivan is an “ex-Marine.” We should remember this and make him an ex-senator too.
