Letter: Stricter leash laws needed

I use the Coastal Trail near Westchester Lagoon daily. I have been bitten by “voice command” dogs twice, even though there is one sign stating dogs must be leashed. In both cases, the owners apologized, claiming the motion of skiing or bike riding excited their dogs and caused them to bite. Neither one of the dogs was current on their vaccinations. In one case, I understand, the dog was put down. In the other case, the owner had to pay for prolonged custodial care for his dog. In both cases, I had to pay for expensive emergency room visits for treatments not healthy for my immune system compromised by surgical complications.

There are dog parks where dogs are free to romp and play off leash. I should not have to fear being bitten, or be insulted when I remind owners to respect the leash law. I should feel safe to enjoy the Coastal Trail with family, children and friends. There should be more signage with Municipality of Anchorage penalty information and stricter enforcement.
