Letter: Cox for School Board

The candidate sign that’s missing when you drive around Anchorage this political season is for candidate Mark Anthony Cox. Normally, that would be a problem for any campaign, but COVID-19 has upended all things “normal,” including politics. Instead, Mark Anthony has created an exclusive social media campaign and taken full advantage of all virtual forums to reach voters — stirring up the political establishment all the way. His contemporary performance has been called “amazing,” “wonderful” and “refreshing” — and I totally agree.

His platform, “Next generation for the next generation,” sums up his naturally optimistic personality, but that’s just the beginning. Mark Anthony brings firsthand experience as an Anchorage School District graduate, past military service, and a University of Alaska Anchorage finance degree that are all welcome attributes for Seat B on the school board, currently held by Treasurer Starr Marsett. He is a responsive listener, a father, and has offered up compromises to make community and parent engagement easier.

I have nothing against the other candidates running and might’ve voted for them in a “normal” year, but this year requires better than status quo. I support Mark Anthony Cox because he’ll bring fresh ideas, business experience, and critical thinking through the lens of a young Black man in Alaska.
