Letter: Bring back the draft

The recent hand-wringing over white supremacists and other far-right groups insidiously infiltrating the military can be countered with one simple move that is healthy for the nation in many ways: Bring back the draft.

Recognizing a draft system will always have its cheaters that dodge their way out of service — like Bill Clinton, George W. Bush and Donald Trump — at least with the draft, we will capture a broad cross-section of ideological, economic, social and racial America.

Make no mistake: The Oath Keepers, Three-Percenters, Proud Boys, the KKK and others like them are not patriotic, and their septic ideologies have no valid role in the military charged with protecting the Constitution of the United States of America. They need to be phased out at the earliest opportunity and replaced with citizens that can truly serve the nation as a whole — and this can be started through reimplementing the draft.
