Letter: Who’s trashing Alaska?

I appreciated Mr. Bob Shavelson’s insightful commentary on July 1. I, too, was rubbed the wrong way by Ms. Corri Feige’s and Mr. Doug Vincent-Lang’s opinion piece.

I do agree that some individual Alaskans are capable of trashing Alaska’s public facilities. The state had to close Lake Louise State Recreation Area in 2020, due to Alaskans trashing the site. However, I doubt those particular Alaskans read the opinion piece and subsequently experienced an epiphany. Very nearly all of us pack it out, and these writers’ lecture simply left us feeling defensive.

I think one significant reason the campground dumpsters mentioned by Ms. Feige and Mr. Vincent-Lang were overflowing is because they were not emptied in a timely manner. That is what “cutting the budget” looks like.
