Letter: On critical race theory

If by “critical race theory” you mean to reduce whiteness to white supremacy; if you are out to shame all white children for their heritage, denying the many contributions of Western European immigrants to the culture of the United States, then I am against it.

But if by “critical race theory” you seek to refute narratives of inferiority that justify systemic oppression and discrimination, as you seek to explain the persistent inequities in infant and maternal health, education, police brutality, sentencing and incarceration; and if “critical race theory” connects to a broader effort to call attention to the meaningful contributions of Black, Indigenous, and people of color who have enriched U.S. culture, and you insist that all children deserve an equal opportunity to dream, to flourish, and to be, then I am all for it.
