Letter: We need progress on homelessness

Silence. Ever since the sdministration and Assembly made a surprising but much appreciated plan for working on the homelessness situation in Anchorage, and put the ball in the administration’s court, we’ve heard virtually nothing.

It took a month for the mayor to appoint a new homeless coordinator, who doesn’t need Assembly approval, and whose past perspectives don’t seem to fit the plan. John Morris, the previous coordinator, displayed a real heart for the homeless. He also expressed satisfaction with the coordinated plan, and continues to show interest in its implementation. The problem hasn’t abated, for the Sullivan Arena is over capacity during this cold snap.

Morris’ sudden and unexplained resignation so close to when the new plan was approved makes me wonder: Was he disheartened by general attitudes within the administration, or was he asked to resign by a boss not at all excited by John’s extreme interest in solving all aspects of homelessness?

The only action I have seen from the mayor that relates to homelessness is his veto of funds for the Mobile Crisis Team. Anything that would help address mental issues would certainly have an effect on the welfare of our homeless population.

Otherwise, there’s no indication of what is happening. Deliberate foot-dragging? It better stop soon. We need updates on developments.
