Letter: Biden’s Alaska visit

Thank you to historian David Reamer for covering the story of U.S. presidents and presidential candidates visiting Alaska. Even though most of the visits were brief, it showed the growing importance of our state.

The last paragraph of his extensive story stated: “Joe Biden has yet to visit Alaska, but the past 70 years suggest it will happen sooner or later.”

I just wanted to clarify that Joe Biden, at that time the U.S. vice president and longtime friend of our former U.S. Sen. Ted Stevens, came to Alaska to give a very eloquent eulogy at Sen. Stevens’ funeral. He gave a bipartisan, wonderful credit to his fellow U.S. senator and shared the tragic events that had affected both of them, as both had lost their first wives due to accidents.

I was at the funeral for our good friend Ted Stevens and was very impressed with Biden’s great tribute to his friend.
