Letter: Fix the port

We now have a very large windfall, and rather than asking how big a dividend the governor can shower on us — with perhaps an additional supplement — could we please get the port fixed? This highly important part of our transportation system is falling apart; its loss will leave Alaska dependent on air and the Alaska Highway, both expensive modes, for goods to and from the state.

Additionally, with the increasing military emphasis on the Arctic, we will need this economical mode for what is certainly going to be more shipment of heavy items. This need is currently satisfied by a port and railway link, which, unless it’s kept in good repair, will fail.

Remember the informal motto of the Army Transportation Corps: “Nothing happens until something moves.”
