Letter: Raising awareness through sport

Let Every Woman Know is a nonprofit organization dedicated to raising awareness of gynecological cancers and providing support for women and their families. The 9th annual “Teal Game” was held at South Anchorage High School on April 23.

The Teal Game is held every year, alternating locations between South and Service high schools also alternating white and teal jerseys. The games are battles between the soccer teams in hopes to not only raise awareness, but to raise money for the organization. Teal Game supporters raised almost $2,000 for LEWK this year. South Soccer fought the game to the end, winning the match in high spirits, 3-0. The community that came together to organize the game, the bake sale, the crowd spirit and so much more, brought the players joy on and off the field. Awareness for GYN cancers was spread though out social media, and with posters made by the South girls soccer team, hanging on the walls of their school.

The LEWK organization participates and volunteers in many activities around Anchorage — the Alaska Run for Women and the Gold Nugget Triathlon, to name a couple. Let Every Woman Know’s “Be Down There Aware” is a phrase used to remind women of all ages to get annual exams, pap tests and checkups. The South soccer team proudly played with LEWK’s logo, teal face paint and teal headbands, representing and raising awareness during their match.
