Letter: A Ukraine solution

Here is a solution to the Russia-Ukraine conflict. But let’s first determine what kind of conflict we are talking about today. It is a civil war going on. Both Russia and Ukraine were part of the Russian empire and then the Soviet Union. True, each country proclaimed independence, but it has changed nothing. For example, in the 1860s, Southern states also declared independence, so technically speaking it was a war between two countries, but we still call it the American Civil War.

Russia should keep Crimea and Donbas, historically part of Russia. However, Ukraine should become a member of NATO. Moreover, NATO should have rights to place nuclear missiles in Ukraine, Norway and Romania. On the other hand, Russia should rights to place the same in Cuba, Venezuela and Nicaragua.

It is going to be, as in the Cold War, mutually assured destruction.
