Letter: Our democracy is at risk

If you only know people who supported Donald Trump — and if you believe therefore that he “must” have won the 2020 election — consider that there are 81 million of us who mostly know people who voted against Trump. Our country is that divided, unfortunately.

But, as the former Trump supporter said in the Jan. 6 Committee hearing last week, it’s not plausible, not even possible, that all the election officials, judges, even those appointed by Trump, etc., were in on a “fixed” election without someone being able to provide solid evidence. Gut feeling doesn’t cut it.

The Republican Party has sold its soul to a corrupt megalomaniac and pathological liar, a would-be dictator who wanted a mob to help him hold onto power by preventing Congress from following the Constitution in certifying the 2020 election results. And the threat to our democracy remains as long as Republicans cannot admit that Joe Biden won the election, and as long as Republicans believe in limiting access to voting rather than on providing a winning message.

Are you willing to overturn our democracy in favor of criminalizing abortion, fetishizing assault weapons, burning up our planet, letting the wealthy trample over everyone else? Without democracy, there will be no liberty and no peace; there will be violence, and it won’t be pretty for any of us.
