Letter: This is who cares

Harriet Drummond’s letter (July 11) stated that the average tax savings under the mayor’s proposed budget would have been closer to $50, not the $560 Mayor Dave Bronson claimed in his letter to taxpayers. Michael Krupa (July 18) said “who cares?” about the difference between the facts and the mayor’s statement.

Let me answer that: people who care about the truth and believe that public officials should be scrupulously honest in their statements care, and we care a lot. It is only by evaluating the truthfulness of an official’s past statements can we decide whether to believe any future statements. I have been here more than 45 years and can assure Mr. Krupa that not telling the truth is not “the true town spirit” of Anchorage.
