Letter: Shelter concerns

I’m once again here to express my deep concerns about the use of the former Golden Lion as a homeless shelter. It was approved for use as a resident treatment center, not for temporary housing. However, I ask myself, and all of the Anchorage Assembly, what good does it do us to testify? They have ignored all of our concerns. They continually go back on their promises.

Will this be a 24-hour shelter, or are they going to turn these people out on the streets every morning to mingle among our children who walk to school or wait at a bus stop? Will they be out there to get in the middle of our commuting traffic? Is it to be a low-barrier shelter, further increasing the risks to the neighboring areas?  How will we be assured of our security and that of the vulnerable elderly and young children living nearby? Criminal activity in these neighborhoods is already too high.
