Letter: Socialism hypocrisy

Earl P. Lackey of Palmer wrote that “… the Democratic Party (which) is trying to turn the country into a socialist country.” (ADN, Sept. 20.) Therefore, he and his ilk should take a public stand against the Alaska Railroad (with its means of production), the Alaska Industrial Development and Export Authority state development bank, the state-run Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport, the Port of Alaska owned by the Municipality of Anchorage, Palmer Municipal Airport owned by the City of Palmer, the Board of Economic Development (City of Palmer), the Palmer Visitor Center, the Anchorage Community Development Authority which owns Easy Park, federal-backed Small Business Administration loans, ad infinitum. When you see the term “Authority,” think government-owned business, such as the Palmer Housing Authority.

This is not to say that I personally am against the above, but I am skeptical about some of what they do, like investing in a fish plant in Anchorage or a grain terminal in Valdez. Alaskans advocating for a road to Ambler are basically advocating for a socialist road. Regardless of what we call it or don’t call it, I at least recognize industrial socialism for what it is: socialism.
