Letter: The migrant problem

The first reality we must face is that a wall or ocean does not and will not stop people escaping persecution, hunger or a better life for themselves or their families. The wall around in China did not stop people, and the Berlin Wall didn’t stop people who were willing to die to escape East Berlin. In fact, we called out to them: “Tear down this wall.” The Atlantic Ocean did not stop Cubans from fleeing to America, and many died.

Many immigrants have died recently (in the past few years) going to Europe and the U.S.

The problems are worldwide problems — there are too many people (now eight billion) and a lack of a consensus among world leaders on how to respond to political, environmental, food sources, population and health problems. We are careening faster and faster toward a world disaster that every farmer, hunter and fisherman has faced: There are limits to sustainability.

What are the limits that will we as Americans are willing to do? Are you willing to send unlawful immigrants back into poverty and persecution? Without some controls, we can’t accept all immigrants, nor should we.

We don’t need childish antics like the governors of Texas and Florida are doing. This is a big problem that needs a universal decision. Please, let’s look at the problem.
