Letter: Fall lawn tips

I must respond to Jeff Lowenfels’ detractors regarding mulching — not raking — lawns in the fall. I, too, was incredulous, a decade ago, give or take a few, when I first read Jeff’s recommendation for fall prep. But there seemed to be no downside; even if he was wrong, it could only mean a temporary setback for our already-pathetic lawn. So I stopped fertilizing and raking, and started mulching. The first year, the lawn looked as good as it ever had, and we had expended no energy. By the third year, visitors were commenting on our lawn, and we were appreciating it more than ever. It simply gets better every year, and I will never rake or fertilize again. Thanks, Jeff!
