Letters to the Editor

Letter: Putting health first

In the book “Chew On This,” there is a story of an Alaska state representative named Mary Kapsner from Bethel who took on Big Soda to protect the teeth and health of the children in her villages from the ravages of excessively sugared soft drinks. Rotting teeth were rampant, as small planes loaded with soda pop flew into the villages. She proposed legislation in Juneau.

In a photo on page 134 of the book, she looks a lot like Mary Peltola. Yes, they are one and the same, and she is now Alaska’s representative in Washington, D.C.!

Congresswoman Mary Peltola not only has the smarts and integrity, but also the courage, to take on big corporations that put profit before the health of our children. We are fortunate to have her as Alaska’s representative in Washington, D.C., and she deserves to be elected for a full two-year term.
