Letter: Green energy future

In their recent commentary, “Growing beyond our history of resource extraction,” Lyndsey Brollini and Anaan’arar Sophie Irene Swope reminded us that “A transition to renewable energy is not just possible; it is necessary.” But let’s not forget that this transition will also help grow Alaska’s economy with good, sustainable jobs. Business Insider reminds us that the 21 fastest-growing green jobs also have an annual pay greater than the overall median pay nationwide.

The Alaska energy transition will build upon the energy-producing heritage and infrastructure that we’ve already established. “Alaska has tremendous capacity to produce clean and affordable hydrogen to meet the growing demand from Alaskans and world markets,” Frank Richards, Alaska Gasline Development Corp. president, said last month. With our abundant wind, solar, hydro, tidal and geothermal sources, this hydrogen can be produced completely green. That’s the way forward for Alaska. What are we waiting for?
