Letters to the Editor

Letter: Fish Creek history

I very much enjoy David Reamer’s historical articles. While Blueberry Lake may have contributed to Fish Creek flow, my understanding is the Fish Creek headwaters are under the Lake Otis Medical Building site constructed by Dr. David McGuire — the former Dr. Michael Beirne clinic site. The history of Dr. Beirne would be another interesting topic.

While working under Davis Construction on the office building project for Dr. McGuire, we had to obtain wetland mitigation credits to install two driveway culverts because the Army Corps of Engineers claimed the ditch adjacent to 47th Avenue was Fish Creek. Fish Creek is now labeled on the Municipality of Anchorage property maps.

You may recall that Pete Zamarello paid a large fine for filling the wetlands for his strip mall at Lake Otis and Tudor Road. A small area of Class A Wetlands remains behind the parking lot separating residential homes on Salem Drive cul-de-sac.
