Letters to the Editor

Letter: Mental health services

Thanks to Cass Pook (ADN, Dec. 18) for sharing her experience with the Alaska Psychiatric Institute. It was refreshing to read an article that contributed a positive outlook about such an essential resource in our community. Unfortunately, over 50% of adults will be diagnosed with a mental illness in their lifetime. One in 15 will experience a serious mental illness that may require hospitalization.

Ms. Pook described a welcoming environment at API. As a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, I feel comforted knowing this vital asset exists in Alaska for clients who need more intensive mental health care than an outpatient therapist can offer. I welcome Ms. Pook to the social worker community.
