Letter: Short-term rentals

I feel that Anchorage needs to address a blooming issue. There is a severe shortage of affordable housing in Anchorage. A large part of this problem is a lot of housing units are being converted into VRBO — vacation rental by owner. In my neighborhood alone, I know of four buildings that are not owner-occupied; one of them is foreign-owned. This removes a lot of units from the rental market.

While the municipality has laws, they are toothless. Before this becomes an issue, it needs to be addressed. Having transient daily renters constantly in your neighborhood is a large issue in a neighborhood.
