Letter: Keep ranked choice

Another costly, wasteful misguided missile seems to have been fired into Alaska politics — the fight against ranked choice voting, spearheaded by what appears to be a group of poor loser GOP members, “Alaskans for Honest Elections.” Apparently, if we didn’t win, then the system is rigged against us, according to candidates Sarah Palin and Kelly Tshibaka.

I’m all in favor of RCV because it allows people to vote outside of closed partisan primaries.

Anyone can run for office without having to kowtow to a party to get on the ballot. That allows me to vote for a Republican, a Democrat or an independent candidate who might not get on the ballot otherwise. A recent letter to the editor also illustrated how RCV can help with the countrywide political split. A writer chastised Alaskans for electing Mary Peltola and said, “Shame on her for siding with Democrats instead of doing what is right.”

In democracies, one party doesn’t have a monopoly on “what is right.” RCV makes for honest elections; don’t repeal it.
