Letter: Let’s tax Outside oil purchases

As pressure builds from Outside groups to stop oil development in Alaska, perhaps it is time for Alaskans to seek a solution to funding our remaining resources. America has always had excise taxes, surtaxes or tariffs of some type for decades. So it is time for the new Alaska energy tax for those in the Lower 48 states to help offset their interference with our resource development.

I believe a $20 fee for every barrel of oil shipped out of Alaska would be needed to replace our lost revenue. Current oil prices are in the $76 per barrel range, and with our $20 tariff, we would have the additional dollars needed to fund our state. It will take you calling your legislator to get this concept moving.
