Letter: Our changed state

Thanks to Elise Patkotak for her commonsense response to recent trends in Alaska government. As the mother of a daughter who has left our state, as well as the teacher of countless students who likewise have elected not to stay here, I regret the absence of talent and vitality that their loss represents.

And, as Patkotak described, when did we stop caring enough about the most vulnerable among us to at least try to offer them protection? This is not the Alaska that I found so attractive when I first arrived almost half a century ago. And while that Alaska was itself a work in progress, the current version makes me feel ashamed.
