Letter: Protect individualism

There is nothing wrong, and everything right, with being gay, transgender, or straight. “Conversion therapy” is psychiatry at its worst, labeling the innocent and the healthy as deviant and diseased. It is no different than the torturous “re-education” prison camps of dictators, who view non-conformity and individuality as the ultimate threats.  We are all human beings first, and anything else second. Individuality and diversity must be protected, not condemned, because people suffer when they cannot be what they are.

The LGBTQ community is known for its caring and kindness — it needs to be a model for the religious factions that persecute it, and who themselves are known for their hypocrisy and hatred. The only religion is mercy, compassion — as stated in Hosea 6:6, Matt. 9:13, 12:7 — and the only heresy is indifference, a cold heart toward the suffering of others.
