Letter: Tell Peltola to support climate solutions

In an ADN commentary last December, I encouraged voters to push Congress for climate solutions. I emphasized that because Alaska has a new representative in Mary Peltola, she really needs to hear from us that climate action is our top priority.

In the half-year she’s been in office, Peltola has shown that she takes seriously the political challenges of being the sole congressperson for the deeply divided Alaska electorate. Progressives may not entirely agree with every position she’s taken so far. But overall, it’s clear that she cares deeply about protecting our oceans and fisheries from climate change and other threats. More than ever, Peltola needs to hear that we’ll support her when she speaks out to address the climate crisis and when she votes for climate solutions.

When the late Congressman Don Young was asked if he would consider supporting legislation to reduce carbon emissions, he said, “I just need to hear from more voters.” In Peltola, Alaskans have someone who can be counted on not only to listen to our input but to act.
