Letters to the Editor

Letter: Appalling action

The Alaska Board of Education demonstrated absolute incompetence on Thursday. There is a long list of valid issues in Alaska education — retaining teachers, increasing literacy, ensuring equitable access for students with disabilities or having opportunities for Alaska graduates after high school. As the student representative articulated, trans students in women’s sports is not an issue.

I am beyond appalled that the “educated” board failed to listen to the invaluable student perspective. I am deeply concerned about the board’s ability to identify problems and act promptly in an actual crisis. This decision raises serious doubts they can overcome their partisan motives. The best service these adults can provide Alaska is resigning, preferably before Alaska hemorrhages more parents and young people hopeless over our dilapidated education system or more irreparable harm happens. We deserve a board that understands their assignment and acts for all of Alaska’s kids.
