Letter: Charging stations

Thanks for the article about electric vehicle charging stations. We love our EV.

The slow station rollout is frustrating, and the sometimes on, sometimes off, nature of the ones that are installed is equally so. That said, the trip to Homer and back has been a breeze so far — 15 or 20 minutes to hit the head, grab a beverage and watch the dollar toll spin on the nearby gas pumps!

I would like to strongly encourage those designing and installing these stations to add the amenities that are common in a gas station. The ones we have used — Dimond Center, Three Bears in Sterling, and AJ’s in Homer — as well as the ones that we’ve seen that are in the works, are out in the open. It may seem odd, but standing in a puddle, handling a high-voltage line in the pouring rain is a tad disconcerting. It will be even more fun in a snowstorm in the dark of winter.

It would also be nice to have a windshield squeegee that I don’t have to “swipe” from the nearby gas pump — assuming there is a nearby gas pump, and that is the exception rather than the rule. Just like a “regular” car, bugs do smash into the windshield.
