Letter: Demand a ceasefire

As an Alaska Jew, friends have told me they’ve been thinking about me since they’ve been awakened to the terrifying crisis in Gaza. The world woke up on Oct. 7. But this nightmare has been going on for nearly a century. And it’s part of the ongoing inevitable result and acceptance of settler colonialism that unfortunately, here in Alaska, we live with every day.

At the root of the struggle is safety. The original homeland security. Who with a moral conscience could disagree that all the world’s peoples deserve a place to call home? This is a human rights issue. It’s not about whose side you’re on. I’m disgusted by the daily death dashboard condoning the “war game” mentality. As Americans, we must demand an immediate cease-fire. The genocide happening in Palestine funded by billions of American tax dollars must end.

The Israeli government’s decision to collectively punish Palestinians by cutting electricity, fuel, communications and water to the entire Gaza strip, as well as its bombardment of civilian infrastructure, constitute clear violations of international law. Humanitarian aid will not stop the genocide. The U.S. must stop fueling the fire. Alaskans, let’s join forces to stop the bloodshed. Please contact Rep. Mary Peltola to support a cease-fire resolution today.
