Letter: Time to speak up

Sen. Dan Sullivan should be commended for finally getting forceful with his fellow Republican senator from Alabama, Tommy Tuberville, who has singlehandedly inflicted significant damage upon our military readiness.

Tuberville’s grandstanding display of incompetence is a good reminder to all in the Republican Party that choices have consequences.

Republicans, especially elected leaders in the party, should speak up when someone like Tuberville, who had zero experience or relevant resume for the job, is running for office. In this case, we could have had a very capable, admired Republican, Jeff Sessions, in that seat instead of Tuberville. Recall that Sessions had 20 years as a U.S. senator and time as attorney general for Alabama and then the U.S. This, against Tuberville’s resume as a football coach. Sessions’ fatal error was not slobbering on Donald Trump’s ring quite thoroughly enough, thereby ending his exceptional career of public service when he lost the primary against Tuberville. He joins other exceptional public servants on the ash heap of the Trump dumpster fire, like Mike Pence.

If Sullivan has learned anything from this latest episode of Trump devotees holding the levers of power, now would be a good time to speak up.
