Letters to the Editor

Letter: Running to make a difference

From reading the ADN lately, one would have a hard time believing that anything good or positive happens in Anchorage anymore. Stories of homelessness, crime, domestic violence, questionable snow-plowing practices, and ineptitude in city politics seem to dominate the pages these days. I was a little disappointed to see that ADN missed an excellent opportunity to celebrate something good, maybe just a quick mention or picture on its front pages.

On Thanksgiving morning, almost 1,900 people converged on downtown streets to run the Turkey Trot, which raised almost $15,000 and 800 pounds of food for the Food Bank of Alaska. Many of the runners and walkers were families with young children, and cheers to them for getting their kids out to participate in some exercise for a good cause.

Thanks to all of the volunteers who made the race work, and even more thanks to our city police officers, some who even got out of their cars to cheer runners on and provide traffic control and safety.

Hats off to all of the sponsors who help make sure that this race is a success.

And finally, a major shoutout to Skinny Raven Sports, which time and time again continues to organize some great events in and around Anchorage — and this year’s Turkey Trot was no exception. Thanks to all who came out and cheered or participated or donated. It makes Anchorage abetter place.
